1. Creating an Empire…

Think ahead about how your T-Shirt designs can be expanded upon.

Perhaps your pattern can live as wall paper or a textile print?

Here is a really simple “How-To” for repeat patterns via Design Sponge.

  2. Wed Jan 18th — One hour delay

    Class will start at 10am.

  3. Turning in your FINAL WORK

All final work for the term is due NEXT THURSDAY, March 17th by 3pm.

You will upload your work to the class server. Please save all of your work with this naming convention:
“Yourlastname_project#”.pdf for example: McGinley_proj1.pdf (or .jpg)

(You will upload a total of 6 files. Project04 consists of 3 t-shirt files).

    Project01 is the Animal Project
    Project02 is the WPA Poster
Project03 is the Radiolab Illustration (all 3 images on one document)
Project04_a, Project04_b, and Project04_c are your 3 t-shirt directions. They will be mocked up like the earlier blog post (the illustration on one side, and the model on the other)

How do I access the server?
You can post from a remote location as long as you have an internet connection.

Go to ‘connect to server’ and type in afp://art.fpa.pdx.edu
    Type in your ODIN info
Choose COURSES, ART 210, MCGINLEY (section I or II), HAND-INS.

  6. HOW-TO GUIDE: Displacement Map Filter

    1. Open your photoshop t-shirt model file. (Find a link to the Threadless Flickr group on our blog).

    2. Go to SAVE AS… and save a copy of your t-shirt model image as black + white, by going to IMAGE / MODE / GRAYSCALE.

Choose DISCARD color info, and MERGE layers.

Go to command/L to increase contrast in the LEVELS window by sliding the middle arrow.

Save this document as a .psd. (I have found that jpegs and tiffs won’t work.) Close that file–you will use it later.

    3. Import your illustration artwork into your layered t-shirt file. (From Illustrator, select your design, then copy and paste into your doc as SMART OBJECT. From Photoshop, select all of your layers and drag or paste into your layered t-shirt file.)

    4. Click on the layer that contains your illustration. Go to FILTER / DISTORT / DISPLACE.

    5. Try these settings as a jumping off point:

    6. When prompted for displacement image, open your black and white copy of your t-shirt model photo that you saved earlier.

    7. Assess the displacement change. It may be too much (lower the numbers in the displacement menu) or not enough (increase numbers) distortion. Adjust numbers until it looks believable.

  7. Inspiration: Mike Mills

Check out the work of Mike Mills (graphic designer turned director). HUMANS includes manifestoes and collections.. a great inspiration for the last project of our term!

  8. T-shirt series project!

This is the one you have been waiting for! The project brief and schedule is below.

Here is an example of how your finals will be presented—as an 11x17 document, with a mock-up on a photo of someone wearing your t-shirt, next to your illustration.

Find models wearing t-shirts at this FLICKR LINK. We will have a how-to demo in class regarding mock-ups.

  10. End of term schedule

The week of March 7-10 is our last week of classes. You will have the following week (finals week) to revise your projects, and your final work for the term is DUE ON THURSDAY MARCH 17th at 3pm via our class server. If you haven’t yet turned in a full-sized WPA poster, or if you want to revise and print again, that is due the last day of class. (March 9th or 10th).

    REVISING WORK:
All work may be revised until the end of the term. You can positively affect your grade by revising work. (You may revise your WPA poster digitally without reprinting if you like-though you may want to print for portfolio review anyway…)

Final work: You will turn in each project as a pdf or jpg file. They will include: 1. Animal Project, 2. WPA Poster, 3. Radio Lab frames, and 4. T-shirt mockups. I will give a detailed explanation of this ‘template’ next week. If you want to, you can create a multi-page PDF in inDesign to present your work in one document.
